John Boyd Memorial Swim
The Boyd Memorial swim in Seaside Heights is a laid-back, point-to-point race on Barnegat Peninsula. Its early-morning start eliminates traffic and parking friction.

- Registration
- Register on the boardwalk at the north-end lifeguard station, between Kearney Avenue and Fremont Avenue. On-site registration opens at 6:30 AM and closes at 7:30 AM.
- Parking
- Find metered street parking from Central Avenue east ($2 per hour, pay at kiosks). You may find free street parking west of Central Avenue, but you'll likely need to hunt.
- Restrooms
- There are public restrooms on the boardwalk at the registration area. Public restrooms (trailer) at Hiering Avenue and Ocean Terrace are about 300 yards north of registration Public restrooms on the boardwalk between Webster and Hamilton Avenues are 200 yards or so north of the start. Shower on boardwalk a few yards north of registration area.
- Bags
- Leave bag in monitored area on beach behind lifeguard station at registration.
- Wetsuits
- Permitted, no penalty, not popular.
- Start
- The swim starts at Lincoln Avenue beach, south of registration. Walk to start along boardwalk ready to go; there is no bag wagon at the start. The post-Sandy boardwalk is OK for bare feet, but watch out for splinters all the same. Enter the beach—now gated—behind the men's room between Webster and Hamilton Avenues. Running start from beach into surf.
- Course
- The swim runs northward back to Hiering Avenue beach. Swim out to first buoy, turn left, proceed north parallel to shore one mile to last buoy, turn left, and head into beach. The course is well-marked with about ten colored buoys that make it is easy to follow.
- Finish
- Running finish from surf onto beach and into timing chute.
- Timing
- Timing chip on ankle band, time clock; no body marking.
- Amenities
- T-shirt. Bottled water and OJ; bagels and cream cheese, fruit.
