Natchez Trace Parkway – Road & trace

photographic subject of page

I followed the Natchez Trace Parkway on my way back from a road trip to New Orleans and Cajun country. The NTP is a scenic, cultural, and historical roadway managed by the National Park Service. Its two-lanes run 444 miles from Natchez, MS, to Nashville, TN (and cross into AL for a short stretch). The speed limit is 50 mph, and commercial traffic is prohibited. My leisurely drive spanned two and one-half days in perfect weather. At night, I pitched my tent in the parkway's free campgrounds. (TL) Southern terminus in Natchez. (TR) Open road ahead! Traffic was sparse all along. (BL) A last rest stop on a quiet morning; only a few more miles to go. (BR) A short stretch of the actual trace, worn deep by travelers. March 2011
