HVNP, Kilauea Iki Crater (3)

photographic subject of page

The loop trail through the crater and along its rim spans about four miles. It descends 400 feet into the crater and then ascends back to the rim over switchbacks and steps that demand only a brief and moderate effort. The photo shows the recommend clockwise direction into the crater. As I started the descent, I got tangled in a succession of noisy school groups. So I turned counterclockwise to avoid the onslaught, only to encounter a succession of self-absorbed tour groups. Oh well. I did eventually break free of the crowds.
