Mp 0.0/7.4: Alt US-40 [Old National Pike] in Turners Gap

Locate: {39.48453, -77.62006} 🄱 🄶 🄾

Orient: The AT crosses Alt US-40 [Old National Pike] near the south terminus of Washington Monument Road, 1.7 mi southeast of MD-67 [Rohrersville Road] in Boonsboro and 5.1 mi northwest of MD-17 [Church Street/Myersville Road] in Middletown. Parking may be available with permission at Old South Mountain Inn, opposite Washington Monument Road.

Park: Room for many cars in large lot, adjacent to AT. Hiker area appears to be on southeast side of lot; signed. It's not clear if permission is still required for this designated area; sources advising permission to use the lot are older than fourteen years.

Note: Old South Mountain Inn is a restaurant serving dinner Thursday through Sunday.

Mp 1.0/6.4: Reno Monument Road

Orient: The AT in Fox Gap crosses Reno Monument Road at Lambs Knoll Road, in Boonsboro. Lambs Knoll Road branches south from Reno Monument Road 0.6 mi east of Moser Road/Park Hall Road and 0.9 mi northwest of Fox Gap Road.

Park: Room for a half dozen cars in dirt lot on southwest corner of intersection; enter from Lambs Knoll Road. The AT passes through this lot.

Note: Reno Monument is about 50 yd east of the lot, on the south side of Reno Monument Road.

Mp 7.4/0.0: Arnoldstown Road and Gapland Road

Orient: The AT in Crampton Gap crosses the T-intersection of Arnoldstown Road and Gapland Road [MD-572], at the entrance to Gathland State Park. From Rohrersville to the west, Gapland Road branches east from MD-67 [Rohrersville Road] 5.1 mi north of US-340 in Knoxville and 7.1 mi south of Alt US-40 [Old National Pike] in Boonsboro: follow Gapland Road for 1.0 mi to slight left onto Arnoldstown Road. From Burkittsville to the east, W Main Street branches northwest from MD-17 [Burkittsville Rd] 4.0 mi north of US-340 in Knoxville and 6.1 mi southwest of Alt US-40 [Main Street] in Middletown: follow W Main Street becoming Gapland Road for 1.1 mi to right onto Arnoldstown Road.

Park: Room for dozens of cars in paved lot on north side of Arnoldstown Road; driveway is on east side of lot, about 140 yd from intersection. Not gated; overnight parking is permitted. Additional parking is available inside the park; see §6.

Connect: For AT northbound, head towards pavilion and ruins in field west of lot. For AT southbound, enter Gathland State Park on paved driveway.

Note: The Civil War Correspondents Memorial is opposite the lot.
